As fall unfolds, Alaska Common Ground shares updates on key policy discussions, changes within our team, and ways to engage on pressing issues—from retirement reform to ballot measures and climate legislation.

Bring the Future Back North – On September 28, Senator Cathy Giessel and Fate Putman discussed how Alaska’s retirement system impacts recruitment and retention of public employees. They presented details on Senate Bill 88, which would reinstate a cost-effective defined benefit plan.

Passing the Torch – After nearly 20 years as ACG’s program coordinator, Kari Gardey has transitioned to volunteering. We welcome Jess Braunlich as our new coordinator, bringing deep experience in community and nonprofit work.

Ballot Measures – Three certified measures are gathering signatures for the 2024 ballot:

  • Restore campaign contribution limits

  • Raise minimum wage and add paid sick leave

  • End open primaries and ranked-choice voting

Fiscal Engagement – Commonwealth North’s updated “Alaska Budget Choices” tool, developed with input from ACG’s Fiscal Policy Workgroup, will soon be live—try your hand at balancing the state budget.

Reflections on Democracy – Board member Stephanie Nichols shares insights from her Marshall Memorial Fellowship in Europe, including her experiences in Serbia and thoughts on freedom.
