At Alaska Common Ground, we’re reflecting on how a sustainable fiscal plan could strengthen Alaska’s economy and improve quality of life, especially as we look toward the next legislative session.
Legislative Session Recap – The first regular session of 2023–2024 adjourned May 17 without passing a budget, prompting a one-day special session. Many major proposals—including constitutional amendments on the Permanent Fund, retirement reform, and ranked-choice voting repeal—did not pass. One notable bill, SB 48, created a carbon offset and storage program on state lands. No long-term fiscal plan advanced. The second half of the session begins January 2024.
Annual Meeting – On May 22, ACG hosted its annual meeting in Anchorage and online. Moderator Gunnar Knapp led a panel with Tim Bradner, Larry Persily, and Nat Herz discussing Alaska’s fiscal crisis, incremental progress, and next steps toward a sustainable plan.

Climate Change Resources – ACG has hosted multiple events on climate action, including a 2019 talk with Dr. Katharine Hayhoe and a 2021 series on Anchorage’s Climate Action Plan. While we prepare our next event, explore our resource page for ideas—like Anchorage’s food waste composting programs available through October 28 or classes from Anchor Gardens.
