Summer 2025 Newsletter: Staying True to our Mission

In this issue, Alaska Common Ground (ACG) continues its work to inform, convene, and connect Alaskans around some of the state’s most pressing issues — from education funding to renewable energy policy. Here’s what we’ve been up to:

State Budget & Education Funding – The Legislature adjourned in May after a contentious session focused largely on the budget. We provide an overview of the session, what’s next, updates on bills we have discussed at our events, and ways to get engaged.

Alaska’s Structural Deficit – ACG has long been committed to educating Alaskans about the state’s fiscal challenges. This summer’s newsletter explores the root causes—like declining oil revenue and inflation—and explains why past fixes aren’t enough. ACG is planning additional fiscal forums this fall to support informed public engagement on potential solutions. For those eager to dive in now, Cliff Groh’s free guide to Alaska’s fiscal crisis is an engaging, accessible resource. (Email cliff.groh@gmail.com to request a copy.)

Event Highlights – ACG hosted several public forums this spring to make complex policy topics more accessible:

  • Annual Meeting (April 2): Libby Roderick shared strategies for productive dialogue across difference.

  • Medicaid 101 (April 29): ACG convened a panel of healthcare experts to break down how proposed federal cuts to Medicaid could impact Alaskans and our state.

  • Recycling in Anchorage (May 27): A look into local waste solutions with Solid Waste Services Director Kelli Toth.

  • Renewable Energy Webinar (April 23): In partnership with REAP, ACG hosted a discussion on the proposed Renewable Portfolio Standard.

All event recordings and resources are available on our website (browse Events at the top of the page).

Transitions and Thanks – ACG expresses deep gratitude to departing board members John Parsi and Katie Severin for their service. We’re also excited to welcome Cami Dalton, a longtime ACG volunteer and retired educator, to the board.

Support from Northrim Bank – ACG thanks Northrim Bank for its continued financial support, which helps make our free educational programming and public forums possible.
