Winter 2024 Newsletter: Reflections & Gratitude

Winter 2024 Newsletter: Reflections & Gratitude

In this issue, Alaska Common Ground (ACG) reflects on a busy year of informing, convening, and connecting Alaskans around key policy topics—ranging from renewable energy and fiscal reform to the future of the Permanent Fund and Alaska’s judicial system. Here’s what we’ve been up to:

2024 Year in Review – ACG hosted a range of public forums and events, including:

  • Renewable Energy Updates (March 26) – Mid-session legislative briefing with Senators Tobin and Wielechowski, and REAP’s Chris Rose. Several bills discussed have since become law.

  • The Future of the PFD (April 11) – An overview of Permanent Fund options moderated by economists and policy experts.

  • Annual Meeting & Education Forum (May 9) – Focused on public education funding with Senator Tobin.

  • Alaskans for Fair Courts (Sept 17) – A look at Alaska’s nationally respected judicial system.

  • Ballot Measure 2 Forum (Oct 20) – A debate on repealing Ranked Choice Voting. The measure ultimately failed.

Looking Ahead – Join us January 7, 2025 for a public forum on modernizing the Alaska Permanent Fund. Co-hosted with Institute of the North, this free event will feature APFC’s Deven Mitchell, Senator Bert Stedman, and others.

Civic Engagement Tools – ACG provides a step-by-step guide to help Alaskans engage with legislators and track bills in the 2025 session. Public input remains a powerful tool.

Member Highlight – We celebrate longtime member and economist Gunnar Knapp for his enduring leadership on fiscal issues and civic engagement.

Thank You – ACG is grateful to its members, speakers, volunteers, sponsors, and partners—including 49th State Brewing, Tudor Road Studios, and others—for supporting our mission of thoughtful, civil dialogue.
