Fiscally Alaskan: Moving Towards Solutions
Alaska Common Ground co-presented with the University of Alaska Anchorage’s College of Business and Public Policy a forum on Alaska’s fiscal and economic challenges. The all-day forum combined several elements to illuminate Alaska’s biggest problems from a variety of angles:
- Non-partisan experts made presentations on the basics—and a number of the nuances—of the State of Alaska’s spending, revenues, and savings. Specific topics included oil and gas tax credits, trends in Alaska’s economy, and the effect different fiscal options are likely to have on Alaskans’ jobs and incomes.
- Advocates of approaches across the ideological spectrum advanced their positions on how to address Alaska’s structural budget deficits and then answered questions from those of different views.
- The focus on potential solutions included inspirational remarks by young business people striving to achieve in Alaska.
- The event’s lunchtime featured entertaining segments of improvisational comedy on Alaska’s fiscal challenge and a skit demonstrating Alaska’s Fiscal Balance Game.
